Aluminium sandwich box

Kidney-shaped aluminum bread box from ALUWA

Two types of aluminium tins (17.5 x 10.5 x 3.0 cm) were used in the GDR to transport sandwiches. They consist of a golden-coloured can and a pink or blue lid. Their slight kidney form is designed to match the shape of a slice of bread. Instead of being smooth, the sides and lid have two integrated notches for better handling, while a stopper helps to close the lid. The space inside the lid has the same form as the tin, only a little smaller, with a contrasting hammer-blow look. The top of the sandwich box is marked with the logo of VEB ALUWA, presenting a planet with the lettering “ALUWA”. Sandwich boxes were popular on holidays. They existed in the GDR in plastic or aluminium, in all shapes and colours.
