Pair of boy’s swimming trunks, size 164

The blue pair of boy’s swimming trunks, size 164, produced by VEB Strickwaren Oberlungwitz, is designed in a simple triangular form. It is both a fashion accessory and a practical piece of swimwear, due to its comfortable material with an elastic waistband. They are decorated with two white-red-white bands on the front. The GDR is often associated with its citizens’ apparent preference for nudist bathing. It is true that nudism was widespread in the GDR from the 1970s onwards and that people often swam naked in many unofficial bathing areas. But there were also so-called textile beaches, where swimming trunks and bathing costumes were required. Often, nudist areas were situated to the left and right of such non-nudist sections, as indicated by wooden signs.
